How big can a granny flat be without consent in NZ?
Under current NZ building code exemptions, you can build a granny flat up to 60 square metres without needing building or resource consent—provided it meets key compliance criteria. Rules are changing here though and very shortly the 60m2 limit may increase to 70m2
What is the difference between a granny flat and a self-contained cabin?
A granny flat usually refers to a larger unit (often 50–70m²) designed for permanent living. A self-contained cabin is often smaller and used for short-term or flexible accommodation, like sleepouts or studios.
Do I need council approval for a self-contained cabin?
If the cabin is under 60m² (soon to be 70m2) and meets the building exemption rules, you usually don’t need a full consent—just a council notification. Leisurebuilt handles this part for you.
How long does it take to get a transportable home delivered?
Most builds are completed within 10–14 weeks, depending on your customisations. Delivery and installation usually happen in a single day once the site is ready.
Are Leisurebuilt cabins warm enough for year-round living?
Absolutely. All units are fully insulated, include double glazing, and meet or exceed NZ’s residential building standards. Warm, dry, and built to last.
